Set To Go : a Brazilian Dance-Off

Alice aka Ryan Neves dances the night away as performer in a Club in Recife in Northern Brazil and in this video by former photojournalist Bárbara Wagner he does a routine using a local dance style known as Faz que vai (Set To Go) step.  Set to an original composition by the Bomba do Hemetério Popular Orchestra, the result is quite stunning.

From South Of The Border to the Emerald Isle

The LGBT community goes globe trotting more than ever these days with often some very surprising results.  Last week 27 year old Emmie Reek a Brazilian drag performer caused quite a sensation when she performed her version of Adele's One and Only on RTE's The Voice of Ireland TV Show in Dublin earlier this week. Emmie (aka student Emery Modesta) should have been preparing to go back home to marry his Polish fiance but when he got the call from the Producers he delayed the wedding in the hope of becoming Ireland’s next singing sensation.   We think he has a good chance of making it judging by this performance.

Recently two Irish filmmakers made a movie set in Havana, Cuba about a young gay man who really only discovered his purpose in life when he donned a dress to become a rather sensational drag performer.  This rather exhilarating movie called "Viva" was filmed completely in Spanish even though director Paddy Breathnach barely spoke a word of it, and was chosen as Ireland's Official Submission for Best Foreign Film Oscar. Viva  is due to be released in the US in April 2016.

Find Your Inner Drag Self

Could 2016 be the year that you finally let your inner Drag persona finally come out? Need that extra push ...... and some very good tips on how to enchant more than just the mirror in your bedroom behind closed doors with your unbridled talent? Then if you live in the UK, you are very lucky as help is at hand.  Those nice people at Finger in the Pie Theatre Group are running The Art of Drag Course for 10 weeks starting January 18th.

It's run by experienced cabaret performer Michael Twaits and the Course is designed for people who already have a background in performance and who want to create a unique drag character and routine. It includes master classes on singing, alt performance, lip-sync and comedy – before going on to teach you about the business of cabaret – including how to market yourself, sell your act and get booked by promoters. At the end of the course you will have the opportunity to launch your professional career as a drag performer with a showcase at Finger in the Pie Cabaret at the world famous Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

If you've been telling your friends for years that you could/should have been been treading the boards at The Vauxhall or even still, have been chosen by Ru Paul to be on Drag Race, then here's your chance.  AND if you book by January 5th, you'll get the Early Bird special price for the course.

The Drag Vegan Queen Needs Help

If you are wanting to start the New Year doing a good deed, then here is one that might just appeal to you.  It certainly did to Rik Ahlberg my Provincetown based Editor & Director who is not only a dedicated vegan but has quite a penchant for Drag Queens too. He is encouraging me (to encourage you) to help Honey LaBronx fulfill her dream of getting her very successful web series back on air.

Four years ago Miss LaBronx started The Vegan Drag Queen Cooking Show which was a big hit from Day 1.  I mean who wouldn't love someone obviously having such great fun combining their love of drag and veganism to make animal rights accessible to a mainstream audience?

Now she needs a few things to transform her new NY apartment into a multimedia studio where she can freely create new podcasts, as well as her new talk show, record her vegan parody songs and create photography projects. To meet the $8000 cost of equipment, which will include a new camera to film my show, audio and lighting equipment, and a new computer Miss LaBronx has set up a Fund Razr Project.

BUT it ends on 31st December 2015 and is still well short of its target, so that is where you come in.  Click on the link to watch the video and if you like what you see (and what's not to like?) then click on the link to make a donation.... big or small .... and help make a Vegan Queen happy.  And my Director as well .... is that too much to ask?

Joseph Wilson : Drag Is My Ecstasy

A couple of months ago we stumbled upon a extraordinary and wonderfully exhilarating short movie called "Stance" about 'drag boxing' which was set in a Working Men's Club in London.  It literally blew our fishnets off.  It was made by Joseph Wilson a 27 year-old Brit filmmaker who is one of the leading figures in the alternative drag movement that is currently revitalizing the East End.  We finally caught up with him in a cafe in  Hackney recently and talked to him about how his very first movie "Drag Is My Ecstasy" has literally become his mantra and his life these days too.  He doesn't just possess an exceptional talent but he's quite the charmer too.

Whilst we edit our detailed interview to publish very soon, take a peak at this trailer of his showreel to discover why we are so excited about Joseph Wilson.

This Is How We Jew It

Detox Icunt, known mononymously as Detox, is a shiksa lucky enough however to be dating a super cute, 5’4,  hairy Jewish boyfriend.  When he invited her over to his parents house for the holidays, Detox got a bit of a shock to find there was no Christmas Tree and the kids were spinning dreidels.

However, she wasn't thrown for long and soon found her inner Barbra Striesand and and quickly learned This Is How We Jew It!

P.S. The track is taken from the new Christmas Queens album, which sees Drag Race favorites including Sharon Needles, Violet Chachki, Miss Fame and Katya lend their voices to a range of festive tracks.

Lady Bunny : Drag Race Hoes

Iconic NY Drag Queen Lady Bunny who has been practising her craft for EVER,  has a new music video called 'Drag Race Hoes' in which she lashes out at all the Reality Show Drag Queens with her very wicked wit and all to the tune of Madonna's Vogue. She claims she is not bitter at their success BUT that doesn't stop her still getting real mean at times.  Funny or not, we must confess we love it.

Lady Bunny says on YouTube "I know all of y'all are excited to see Season 8 of RuPaul's Drag Race. But don't you dare get so excited that you forget about all the fab queens from seasons past! And for the record, in my book "hoes" is a compliment which means you get laid whenever you want it. And I proudly identify as a hoe myself!

Have You Heard Miss Coco Peru

The indefatigable Clinton Leupp has been performing as Miss Coco Peru for over 24 years now with his razor-sharp wit and those deer-in-the-headlights attention-grabbing eyes, his latest hit show ‘Have You Heard’ reaffirms his position as one of the best drag performers trotting around the globe these days. A storyteller, monologist, actor, singer, comic, entertainer, mentor and passionate gay activist, Miss Coco is sharp, sassy and sophisticated and has this remarkable natural ability to make sure that we all see the funny side of life. Outspoken and outrageous her one-woman-show in 2012 summed her up beautifully: it was called ‘She’s Got Balls’. When we caught up with Clinton after a recent performance the first thing that struck us was his wonderful warmth and his loud infectious laugh. He is unique in the fact that unlike most cutting and somewhat sarcastic drag performers he exudes happiness on and off stage and was a sheer joy to spend time with. Over a martini (or two) he shared his views of life, love and laughter with queerguru.

QG: Let’s start at the very beginning and talk about your ‘Coming Out.’

It may seem ridiculous to people who come to my Show and see me wearing a dress and being as flamboyant as I am now, to think that I ever had to ‘come out’ in the traditional sense, but I did have to go through the same process just like every other gay man. There was a time when I was in a Theater Program in College and closeted and was constantly told to ‘butch up’. And for years I did try to be someone who I wasn’t especially as I wanted to be accepted as an actor and you had to pass for straight as there were not that many gay roles back then.

When I was 23 years old I had a boyfriend and we went to the Gay Pride Parade in Manhattan and I was in seventh heaven as I had never ever seen such a large and diverse crowd of gay people in one place. However, on the train on my way back home to the Bronx afterwards my elation quickly subsided as all my old fears and worries came rushing back.  It was at that very moment that I decided that from now on I wanted to only be myself and that I wasn’t prepared to go back even part way into the closet.

I was very lucky as when I came out to my parents they were actually relieved that I was both healthy and happy especially as we had just lost my sister to cancer. I had all the usual fears and dread of coming out just like anyone else but it was only when I addressed them that life got better for me. Being effeminate in a working class area of the Bronx had been torture and I had been picked on and bullied during my entire childhood and adolescence. Now that I was an openly gay man I started to embrace everything I had learned to hate about myself. I was determined not only to accept this side of me but as Miss Coco I was going to dress it up and glorify it, and become the gay man who I chose to be.

There is something wonderful about owning who you are. I learnt then if people did not respect me, that it was of no consequence, as they didn’t control me anymore

QG: How did Clinton Luepp morph into Miss Coco Peru?

I didn’t know anything at all about Drag and then I went to see the great drag icon Charles Busch in his play ‘A Lady In Question’ and I was completely mesmerized.  I could see that he and the entire case were having THE best time ever. And that included Julie Halston playing Countess Kitty in her broad Bronx accent that college had insisted I lose.  I just thought, I want to do what Charles is doing.

I’m a great reader and all through my life books have a habit of arriving in my library at the exact moment I have needed them. It was at this time that I came across one about a native American called ‘Two Spirits’ which was all about being a third gender. When I read that I thought ‘Oh My God’ this is it. In my whole life up till then I had been searching for something that I could truly identify with, and now I had found it. I’m decided I’m going to do Drag and I’m going to be this third gender. As soon as I said it, everything started falling into place.  It felt like my calling and that I had found my vocation.

QG: You once said ‘I’m not impersonating a woman: it’s just an extension of me'.

Well I never intended Miss Coco to be a real woman per se because the stories I tell are all-autobiographical and so I’m often talking about when I was a little boy.  So for me the goal when I started Coco was to confuse people a little telling his stories whilst wearing a dress.  Then after a while I just wanted audiences to know the stories just by connecting to someone who was simply another human being.

QG: You have a remarkable gift for observation, which comes through in the stories that you tell on stage, are they all true?

Yes, every one of them are based on my life. I have always been very resourceful at finding humor in everyday incidents right from the very beginning. My parents had me late in life so my childhood was spent amongst a group of old people who had grown up through WW2 and who had not had an easy life.  They were all heavy drinkers and heavy smokers and as a little kid I became their bartender.

QG: Really? (laughing)

Yes I even went around with a tray emptying all the ashtray, but I just adored them and I loved being there listening to this wealth of funny stories and jokes being surrounded by these wonderful larger than life characters.

QG: Do you tell the stories straight as they happened?

Well, I do add a little spice to them naturally to bring out the funny element, and that seems to work.  Sometimes so much that they appear so over the top that people will come up to me and say ‘You didn’t really physically chase that group of little old Indian ladies around Sydney Harbor because they were giving you the evil eye did you? ‘ And I have to say yes, it was all true, which totally shocks them. (laugh)

QG: Tell us the story behind your famous red hair, and the fact that you must be one of the few Drag Performers who never changes her wig.

When I first started performing I had a great big fussy Ann-Margaret wig but that was such hard work maintaining it and to be perfectly honest, it was a real drag.  Then the moment I found my wig and had it styled with flip ups I instantly knew that this was perfect for Miss Coco.

I was always drawn to the silhouette that I adopted for Coco.  I wanted it to be very long and sleek and not over the top as Coco never wears a lot of jewelry or glitzy dresses. It was to be sophisticated but understated and I wanted her to be different than what most people expect of drag.  Coco and I are both very happy with how she looks and the one night I actually dared to wear a shorter version of the same wig people HATED it!  (laugh)

QG: Tell us about your breakthrough role in ‘Trick’ where in one small scene you ‘stole’ the movie and our hearts.

I was not originally meant to be in the movie at all but Jim Fall the Director is a good friend of mine, and asked me to help him out in the audition process.  I ended up reading the Tori Spelling part whilst he tested potential male leads, and suddenly everyone told Jim ‘you’ve got to keep the Drag Queen in the movie’.  So they wrote a part of me and were kind enough to allow me to re-write my infamous bathroom monologue in my own voice.  Some years previously somebody had actually tried to lure me into bed by saying  ‘It’s Big It’s Beautiful …you’re gonna love it.’ and I always knew that I have to use that line in a performance one day.

QG: How deliberately was it that you looked more like Tori Spelling than she did? (laugh)

When Tori Spelling flew to NY to audition, she had blonde hair. However when it came to filming she showed up on the set with red hair, and when Jim Fall tried to question it, her hairdresser said ‘honey, don’t touch her hair it will just fall out as she has dyed it way too often!’   We didn’t do a scene together so the penny never dropped until we saw the completed movie on the screen at Sundance, and I thought ‘Oh My God, we could have been sisters or something more tragic’  (laugh)

QG: Did you ever imagine that this one small movie part would make such a major impact on your career and life?

Well, I remember the first time that I ever saw a gay movie and it impacted me so much I just hoped that one day I would get to be in one and help others feel the same way. And now 15 years later when young people come up and tell me that ‘Trick’ was the first movie that made them first feel good about themselves and helped them come out, it makes me so happy.

I never ever get tired of people shouting out 'It Burns’  to me in the middle of the street. Any time anyone wants to celebrate my work, I embrace and enjoy it, and I never ever take it for granted.

QG: How much fun was it making the ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ movie with Jack Plotnick & Varla Jean Merman?

Actually, the first couple of days were not that much fun at all as in my own shows I am used to playing it for laughs but now I was having to play a sad sack. The crew were laughing their pants when Varla and Jack were acting, but looked so down and miserable when it was my turn as my role was a bit of a downer.  Confused I phoned Jim Fall who just said ‘play it for real’ and that’s what I did, and I found the craziness in my character, and I was so happy with the result.

QG: As were audiences as you all picked up Best Acting Awards for that.  When is the sequel coming out?

Soon I hope. We have filmed it all and our director Richard Day is now doing the final edit.

QG: You travel an awful lot these so will you tell us about your experiences taking Miss Coco to London?

The thing I loved most about London were the audiences, and one of the best compliments I have ever had was from one of the Soho Theater staff who said ‘we love working your Shows because people come in a good mood and leave feeling even happier.'

I got another different buzz when I was  eating in Balans Restaurant one night and the Doorman recognized me and thought that he and I could do a version of the bathroom scene in ’Trick’ with me performing on him.  I was very flattered but I am very married too.

I was worried that being happy would take away my edge. Sometimes people say write another new show which is tough as I am happy new and people want me to be miserable and bitter as they perceive that’s where real comedy is.  I am really fortunate that I have such a good husband who supports me and funs joy in my performance.  And I find comedy within our own lives.  Like the time we first met his sister and he just happened to fail to mention that he was naturist and we were all to going to be naked (Laugh).

QG: You never use Raphael your husband as a comic foil as is tradition.

I never thought of that.  I play up the whole thing of him being from Spain where everyone is meant to be romantic like I think British people are all so posh.  But all you need to do is to take one trip to Southern Spain and see the Brits on holiday and honey you soon realize they ain't so posh at all. (laugh) They can be just as trashy as the rest of us.

QG: You are also a passionate activist, what is on your agenda right now?

I’ve just done  a Benefit to help raise awareness about bullying  as finally people are doing something about this .

The world is changing .  I’m heavy on littering too : I like things to be pretty.

QG: What’s next for Miss Coco?

On the Road doing my new show, and I'm writing a musical with a composer who just approached me which is very exciting. The reality is that I have pretty great life regardless.

QG: Before you go to get ready for your Show tonight, I have to ask, did you really perform in a Nudist Colony?

Yes, but I was fully clothed (laughing).  I have to tell you for a bunch of people who are meant to be free-spirited and relaxed, they really were not a fun audience. They were kind of limp!

QG: But where did you look as you performed?  (laughing).

Well straight into their eyes naturally!

Catching Some Of The Magic

Joe Spada caught some of the magic that goes into the making of our interviews for Provincetown Community Television.  Here facing Rik Ahlberg and his camera is none other than the fabulous Miss Varla Jean Merman driving down P Town's Commercial Street in a vintage Mustang convertible.

The third member of our team on this occasion was the driver (and owner of the car) Andy Wentz.

Ryan Raftery is The Most Powerful Woman In Fashion

Ryan Raftery is 'The Most Powerful Woman in Fashion'.  Even Anna Wintour's daughter Bee Shaffer went to check him out in his hit musical to see how much like her mother he really is. She evidently took a video of the performance and showed it to her diva Ma who just remarked 'he didn't get the fashion right'.  Now Ryan aka La Wintour is back in New York for one final Fashion Week before he hangs up his faux Chanel jacket ( that he bought after Bee's visit) up for good.  On Sunday 13th at Joe's Cafe on Lafayette street he ends two successful sold out runs in LA & NY to an end.

When asked he thought/hoped La Wintour may even show up herself, he said he would prefer that she didn't. 'There is only one star of a Helen Lawson production'.

Jinkx Monsoon & Major Scales Dish The Dirt

Here's a rather wonderfully funny and incisive interview with the delightful Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales conducted for Provincetown Community Television when they spent the summer in P Town performing in two hit shows at The Art House. Jinkx, winner of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 5 and voted 'America's Next Drag Superstar' and her musical partner Major Scales talk about life, love , Seattle and 'Ross CrossDress for Less'., performing and so much more.

Life long friends since meeting at College, Jinkx and The Major have been thrilling packed houses for years with their hysterically funny shows which mix glamorous drag with more than a touch of their quirky freaky humor. Asides from 'The Inevitable Show' which they both wrote together, they are alternating that nightly in P.Town with 'Return to Grey Gardens' written by Peaches Christ who also co-stars with them too.

The Incomparable Dina Martina

The incomparable and hysterically funny Dina Martina has described herself as a tragic singer, horrible dancer and surreal raconteur. Trust me she is all of those and more, but ever since she first exposed her bizarre performances to a startled world back in Seattle’s Center on Contemporary Art in 1989 she has accumulated legions of devoted fans who have dubbed her “magically warped”, “hilariously unfortunate” and “utter genius”.  She is in her own words totally ‘off the charts’.

Absolutely packed with ludicrous song, horrifying stories and overburdened costumes, Dina Martina’s shows are impossible to adequately describe, other than that they’ve become synonymous with jaw-dropping pathos and mind-blowing comedy. This unique and unpredictable performer is very much an acquired taste, but it’s one that we at queerguru love to indulge in, so we were thrilled (and a tad apprehensive) when the great lady agreed to take tea with us as the summer drew to a close.

QG: Thank you for taking Tea with me this afternoon Miss Martina, could you describe exactly where we are and what you are wearing for our readers?

DM: Thank you. We're in my suite at the Laguardia Airport DoubleTree Inn and because this is a print interview, I am wearing jeans and a camisole. The camisole is from Victoria's Big & Tall Secret.

QG: How did you spend your summer this year?

DM: I spent my summer performing in Ptown (Provincetown, Massachusetts), which is so full of tradition and heritages. It's the first place the Pilgrims stopped in the U.S., but they moved on to Plymouth 'cause nobody goes there so parking's real easy. Ptown is also the nest egg of American Theatre, so it's crawling with celebrities. On any given day, you could be eating sandwiches with Joan Collins or disco dancing with Fatty Arbuckle and the Pointer Sisters.

QG: You are back in Provincetown for your 11th season, what keeps bringing you back?

DM: First off, two words: saltwater taffy and award-winning fudge! Second off, it's such a charming little finger of land, it'll steal your heart and your soul. A lot of the locals say Ptown's best kept secret is the great white sharks, but I think it's the ticks. Oh, and the biting flies are always a perineum favorite.

QG: You are quite unlike any other entertainer we have ever seen, how would you describe your own performances?

DM: My mother told me if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all – so I don't. But what I will say is that if you come to my show, you may or may not see the following: white carriages under the stars, live violin dubstep routines, shivering girls in short skirts and high heels, one of those old, beat-up school buses with chickens on it, and an elevator that only goes down.

QG: Many poor scribes (like me) fail to do you justice, what is your favorite review?

DM: I can't pinpoint a specific review, but there are press quotes that stand out: "As graceful as a Coke machine moving about on a hand truck", "She looks like Liza Minnelli and Liz Taylor hit with a brick" and "Dina comes from an alternate reality where female superstars resemble walrus prostitutes".

QG: After the Show the other night many of the ladies and young men were talking about your unique fashion sense, do you have any tips that you could pass on?

DM: For myself, I enjoy a snug fit to better showcase my ballpark figure. I find that if it fits like sausage casing, you feel more alive. Vive la tourniquet!

QG: When you go home at night is there anyone else there to keep you company besides Phoebe your daughter?

DM: One night, a few years back, there was a woman who was standing in the corner of my bedroom, but she left through the window when I turned my lamp on. Other than that, I'm just in love with Show Business. Of course, there was a time when I enjoyed gentlemen callers, but that time is done and we all die alone.

QG: Why is it that of all the awards you have won, your movies that are part of your show have never ever been nominated for an Oscar?

DM: I'm guessing it's just a clerical error, but I can't say for sure. Thank you for mentioning it, though.

QG: As you write all your own songs (or ‘alter’ others) do you have a new album out?

DM: Yes, I have a new just-released, soon-to-be-finished album titled Dina Martina: Haunted by Maritime Tragedies. I'm so proud of "Maritime Trads" because it's got a real pan-Asian vibe; more so than my 3 previous albums (Dina Martina: Street of Dreams/Blunt Force Trauma, Dina Martina: Anthem of a Fur Trader's Wife, and the Christian rock album, Dina Martina Deuterockin' Me).

QG: You’ve appeared at Soho Theatre in London 3 times now, if your British fans nominated you to be the next Queen, would you stay and accept?

DM: Those are some mighty sensible shoes to fill. I think I'd rather start small, like Court Jester, and work my way up. There's less dissention in the ranks when you're promoted from within.

N.B. those Press Quotes are 100% real…..

Miss Sherry Vine Throwin' Up

If you believe that a really good drag act should be (more than a little) offensive  then you'll love Miss Sherry Vine.  This multi-talented singer-actress and the winner of the first ever Glammy Award. HX Drag Queen of the Year has her own You Tube Channel full of her wonderfully bizarre videos  and this is one of our all time favorites.  It co-stars Bob The Drag Queen and is a parody of Jessie J's Burnin' Up called Throwin' Up.

Capitol Hill is simply capital!

One of our favorite campy queer web series CAPITOL HILL is back with Season 2.  Set in Seattle 'the greatest city in the world' it is a perfect parody of some classic  O.T.T. T.V. series of the 1970's and 1980's. It follows the fortunes of Rosie Smells (played by Waxie Moon) a young innocent girl who has escaped the backwoods of Portland Oregon and lands herself a job as a TV presenter on her very first day in the City (it's a Fairy tale after all!)  Written and directed by Wes Hurley, each episode is introduced by Ben de La Creme who was Miss Congeniality on Season 6 of Ru Paul's Drag Race.

For the second season the Cast will also star  Drag performer and RuPaul's Drag Race season five winner Jinx Monsoon, with appearances from Big Brother contestant Kenny Brain (of the infamous leaked Grindr photos too that showed ALL his huge talent) and adult film star Colby Keller.
