Today one of our favorite female (feline) stars is celebrating her 41st Birthday. Unlike all the instant celebrities from Reality TV, Hello Kitty never ever stops working AND as she doesn't technically have a mouth shut, she keeps all her opinions to herself. Happy Birthday Hello Kitty.

Margaret Cho hits Miami
The extraordinary wild and fabulously funny women ......and thoroughly good egg ...... Margaret Cho hits Miami. I got to meet her this summer in P. Town where, to put it frankly, the woman is not surprisingly worshipped, as she loves this (very gay) speck at the tip of Cape Cod as much as we love her. She sat down with me on the beach to talk to P.T.V. about life, love, Robin Williams, Joan Rivers, her new show Psycho .........and the fact that she wants to marry me. (Well, truthfully perform marriage ceremonies for lucky same-sex couples who win her competition.)
This Friday Margaret hits Miami and so I'll be seeing again but this time sitting in the packed auditorium of the Filmore Theater. It you live in South Florida and don't have a ticket, then phone up the Box Office now and beg for one. You'd be a fool to miss Margaret on top of her form : I know as she had us all rolling in the aisles of the P Town Town Hall one sticky night in August.
Panic not if you don't have the good fortune to be here in the Sunshine State, Miss Cho will be touring for some time yet. Check out her schedule http://margaretcho.com/
#LoveWins For All
After the US Supreme Court made their momentous decision back on June 26th 2015 ruling that same-sex marriage was legal in all 50 States, a talented young filmmaker called Yulin Kuang found her own way of expressing her joy. Using Shakespeare's Sonnet 116 ...."let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments" .... as her inspiration, she set up to make a video showing 50 same-sex couples in 50 states to celebrate #LoveWins. Released by Field Day, a YouTube Collective of dynamic filmmakers, it's guaranteed to have you reaching for your Kleenex. This time however, it is for tears of joy.

Ben Whishaw Falls In Love
The UK's BBC TV Channel have just announced that out gay actor Ben Whishaw is to star in a new spy/gay romance miniseries next month called 'London Spy'. It is the story of a chance romance between two people from very different worlds, one from the headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service, the other from a world of clubbing and youthful excess.
Whishaw plays Danny – gregarious, hedonistic, romantic and adrift, who falls for the anti-social enigmatic and brilliant Alex (played by 'Wolf Hall's' Edward Holcroft). Just as the two of them realise that they're perfect for each other, Alex is found dead. Danny, utterly ill-equipped to take on the complex and codified world of British espionage, must decide whether he's prepared to fight for the truth.
Written by Tom Robb-Snith ('Child 44') the series also stars Oscar Winner Jim Broadbent and veteran actress Charlotte Rampling.
Whishaw meanwhile can be seen on screens around the world next week when he reprises his role as 'Q' in 'Spectre' the latest James Bond thriller

Marie's Crisis : Show Tunes Heaven
When Show Tune Queens click their heels three times and pray for home we know that they don't mean Kansas with Toto, but the one place in the world which is the nearest they will ever get to heaven. It's called Marie's Crisis Cafe and for the past 40 years (and maybe more?) it's been New York's most treasured piano bar where local gay men and musical theater performers gather round the keys nightly and sing their hearts out to their favorite Broadway show tunes. What they lack in talent (!) is made up for in boundless energy and passion. As the pianist says each night 'Welcome to Marie's Crisis, where showtunes come to die!'
It's a little like stepping back in time as you enter and walk downstairs as after all there has been a bar there in the West Village since the 1850's. Initially it was a prostitutes den, then became a boy bar in the 1890's and it lasted right through Prohibition. It's curious name came from The Crisis Papers by Thomas Paine who died in the house, not it must be said from an overdose of sentimental renditions of numbers like 'You're The Top' or 'Climb Every Mountain'.
Now the American Theater Wing has produced this rather wonderful tribute to one of New York's most venerated venues. As bartender Doug Thompson (pictured above) aptly sums up “Marie’s is the island of misfit toys for people who love show tunes,” And don't be confused by the fact there are women in the video, Marie's has always been a hetero friendly place too.

Bitch, I'm A Bottom
Andrew Christian underwear model Pablo Hernandez who is also not adverse to 'modeling' in just his birthday suit has done a rather wonderful parody music video of Madonna's "Bitch I'm Madonna" featuring Nicki Minaj from Rebel Heart. Evidently Pablo is singing his own version straight from the heart. Who knew?

Dane DeHaan as the next James Dean
When we reviewed the star studded 'Kill Your Darlings' movie about the Beats Generation two years ago we wrote 'young Dane DeHaan playing the extrovert Carr with a career defining performance, stole every scene he was in.' Since then DeHaan has been in great demand from 'The Devils Knot' to 'The Amazing Spiderman' etc., and he actually has five movies scheduled to be released next year alone.
This December however sees his possibly best performance to date with the opening of 'Life' the story of the relationship between the photographer Dennis Stock and the man whose photos he shot for a front cover story of Life Magazine who was none other than movie star heartthrob James Dean. Directed by Anton Corbijn ('Control', 'A Most Wanted Man') with Robert Pattinson playing Stock, the movie stars Dehaan as Dean.
When the movie premiered at the Berlin Film Festival it received rave reviews especially for Dehaan. 'Variety Magazine' wrote 'Makeup and mimicry can only take an actor so far when tasked with playing one of the most enduring stars in the cinematic firmament: More crucial is that he have a certain intangible star quality of his own. Such is the success of Dane DeHaan’s magnetic take on James Dean.'
Scheduled to be released in US movie theaters December 5th : we cannot wait.

Chemsex
Chemsex is the name given to the rising phenomenon which refers to the use of drugs in a sexual context. Often referring to group sex that can last for days, the allure of chemsex has lead to many young men being trapped in a vicious circle of sex, addiction and dependence.
Now there is a powerful and potent new film that tells the stories of gay men whose lives have been affected by the crisis; from self-confessed ‘slammers’ to sexual health workers, from those who deny there’s a problem to those who ‘got out alive’. Offering unprecedented access, Chemsex is a brave and unflinching journey into the dark underworld of modern, urban gay life.
Directed by William Fairman of VICE UK and Max Gogarty, the movie is being released by Peccadillo in UK & Irish Cinemas on 4th December 2015, and hopefully globally very soon after that. Watch this space.

The Danish Girl Shines
Whilst the movie The Danish Girl is wowing crowds as it currently plays prestigious Film Festivals around the world and is getting nothing less than rave reviews for its star Eddie Redmayne, there are still mumblings about it's lack of political correctness having a cisgender man playing a transgender women. 'Time Out' even goes so far as to pronounce the movie is 'too conservative' in its approach to this hot button topic.
Now Focus Features have released a second trailer of the movie, and frankly we are even more convinced that Redmayne was THE perfect actor for the role, and are still placing our bet that he will end up being nominated for a possible second Best Actor Academy Award come December.
Chevalier : May The Best Man Win
An intriguing new Greek comedy pulled of an unexpected coup at the London Film Festival last week beating out a whole host of prestigious new movies to pick up the Best Picture Award. Directed and co-written by Athina Rachel Tsangari, it is the tale of six male acquaintances who take to the high seas on a private yacht and embark on a rigorous series of personal and physical challenges to see who is the best and worthy of the title 'Chevalier'.
The individual challenges which these man take very seriously range from the farcically mundane, like assembling an IKEA piece of furniture, to the more highly personal such as when the men verbally arouse each other to compare erection sizes. It all boils down to simply who is the most macho, something that so many men can and will relate too, although in this instance, the results are highly amusing and positively surprising.
No date has been set yet for the movie's general release : watch this space.

Oh Deary Me : It's The High Life
Years before actor Alan Cumming had his breakthrough performance on Broadway playing the M.C. in 'Cabaret' and picking up Tony and Drama Desk Awards, he was back in Scotland writing and starring in a very low budget TV situation comedy that became a camp classic. With fellow actor Forbes Masson he created 'The High Life' that followed the cabin crew at a fictional airline Air Scotia flying out of Scotland's Prestwick Airport.
Cummings played Sebastian a sharped-tongue, narcissistic, alcohol-loving rather vindictive flight attendant, whilst Masson played his sex-obsessed colleague Steve. The rest of the crew was made up of Siobhan Redmond as the uptight, man-hungry, bullying Chief Stewardess Shona, and Patrick Ryecart as the mad-as-a-hatter Trekkie pilot Captain Duff.
They only got to make one series before Cumming's career took off and so the second one they had written never got made. There is a wonderful sense of bonhomie with the cast as they play out the most silliest of plots on a set that screamed low budget that contributed to the faithful following that the 'The High Life' racked up for the BBC all chanting out their infamous catchphrase 'Oh Deary me!' Now 20 years later, with all 7 episodes available on YouTube, there is a whole new resurgence for Cumming's high camp performance all over again. Be warned though, the cast all speak in a very heavy Scottish brogue which needs to be 'translated' at times!

Liz in September : Women's Week Film Pick
For the first ever Venezulean lesbian movie writer/director Fina Torres has made a really wonderful love story, and although it has more than its fair share of tragedy, it is an exceptional heartwarming film. Starring the beautiful ex-supermodel Patricia Velasquez (from 'The L Word') and an incredible ensemble cast of women, it is a wee gem.
After its successful screening this past weekend at the 7th Annual Fort Lauderdale MiFo Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, it's now heading north to Provincetown where it is part of 31st Womensweek Celebrations. We have chosen it as the 'pick of the week' and here is the queerguru review for Provincetown Community Television (which can also be viewed on our TV channel and Facebook page too)

George Clooney gets all dragged up in Hail Caesar
The Triple Oscar Winning Coen Brothers have just released the first trailer of their latest film which sees George Clooney dragging up to play a big 1950's Hollywood movie star in 'Hail Ceaser'. If that alone is not enough to get you worked up, then we should tell you that it also stars Tilda Swinton as a hard-bitten journalist, Scarlett Johansson in a mermaid costume and Channing Tatum tap dancing on a table
Clooney plays Baird Whitlock, one of the studio's biggest stars, who is kidnapped while shooting a big swords-and-sandals epic also called 'Hail, Caesar'. In addition to the four names already mentioned, it also features Josh Brolin, Frances McDormand, (aka Mrs Joel Coen), Jonah Hill and hot up-and-comer Alden Ehrenreich. If you love Coen Brothers when they play funny like in 'The Big Lebowski' and 'Burn After Reading' we think you will love this one too.
Expect to see the movie in theaters in February 2016.

10 of The Best Coming Out Movies
1) The Way He Looks : An award winning Brazilian film written and directed by Daniel Ribeiro about a blind schoolboy and his virginal innocent friend who are slow to realize their feelings for each other. Tender, with some neat touches of humor, none more so than when Gabriel insists that Leo learns how to dance. What does make it all so compelling is the captivating performances of the young lead actors, particularly Ghilherme Lobo who was so pitch perfect as Leo.
2) Out In The Dark : From LA-based Israeli newbie director/writer Michael Mayer, a heart-string- tugging story of forbidden love between an Israeli and a Palestinian in Tel Aviv where the later risks his life if he comes out to his Arab family back home. It’s all the more remarkable that after all the horrors the pair go through, that the overwhelming feeling that one comes away with from this compelling and enchanting film, is of hope.
3) In The Name Of : Polish LGBT movies are a great rarity and this one from writer/director Malgoska Szumowska is a remarkable and unpredictable drama that deals with a repressed Catholic Priest’s personal struggle with his homosexuality. Brave, controversial and extremely moving: like (No. I in our list) it won a prestigious Teddy Award for best LGBT film at Berlin Film Festival.
4) Free Fall : This rather compelling debut feature from writer/director Stephan Lacant about forbidden love in a very rampant homophobic community is a hot and steamy German tale where one straight trainee Policeman discovers that probably he shouldn’t be getting married to his pregnant girlfriend after all when he has a very physical relationship with one of his colleagues. Very well written, and beautifully acted.
5) Beautiful Thing : From 1996 this wonderful British film version of Jonathan Harvey’s hit stage play about two gay teenagers finding themselves and each other in a Council Estate in London. Young Jamie is escaping sport hours, to avoid being the victim of his comrades and Ste, his neighbor, is beaten by his father, and comes to sleep overnight. They discover new feelings, sleeping in the same bed.
6) Circumstance : This coming-of-age story from first time director Maryam Keshavarztells is of two teenage girls, who are best friends, dealing with all the restrictions of growing up in Iran today. The girls are exploring their emerging sexuality as they become part of Tehran’s underground party scene. Superb, if not scary, look at some of the conflicts and struggles in contemporary Iran.
7) Beginners : Christopher Plummer’s Oscar winning turn as newly widowed 75 year old Hal who declares to Oliver his son that he is now gay and is determined to make the most of the time he has left. Written and directed by Mike Mills and evidently based on his own father's life. Sweet and very funny.
8) Edge of Seventeen : Directed by David Moreton, this sentimental story set in small town America in 1984 teaches High School student Eric that love and sex are not the same thing and he almost goes back into the closet. Great period piece, well acted and a neat happy ending.
9) Mixed Kebab : Bram a good looking Belgian/Turkish 20 year old gets thrown out of his family home in Antwerp when he comes out although his father is happy to house his other sons who are crooks which is far better than being gay. An intelligent drama from writer/director Guy Lee Thys that becomes an entertaining romance.
10) White Frog : Nick, the youngest son of a wealthy Chinese/American family tries to put the pieces together of his older brother’s life after he was tragically killed in a car crash and discovers that he had wanted to ‘come out’ to him before he had died. Very endearing.

Danny Pintauro Talks Candidly
After revealing his HIV status to Oprah last week, and then getting a less-than-sympathetic reception when he discussed it further on 'The View', former 'Who’s The Boss' star Danny Pintauro sits down with HIV Equal for a frank and open interview on life, love and sex. Pintauro spills the beans on his take on meth addiction, his HIV status, Grindr, unsafe sex before he is asked for his opinion on PrEP on which he professed he was a fan, but added this rider.
“The conversation with PrEP is not simply if you take this regularly your chances of getting HIV are very slim. It’s, if you take this regularly your chances are slim, but you still need to do the following things in a sexual environment or you’re going to end up with something else.”
Watch the video to see how important it is that celebrities, who young gay people in particular look up too, use their own experiences to help warn and advise others. queerguru gives big kudos to Danny Pintauro for speaking out like this.

The Best of Marion Cotillard : So Far
photograph : Getty Images |
Still to come this year is another outing with Fassbinder in Justin Kurzel's 'Assassin's Creed', and to be followed by a starring role in the latest movie from Canada's own multi-award winning enfant terrible Xavier Dolan called ' It's Only the End of the World'. It seems however that for Miss Cotillard that its just merely the start of it. To celebrate queerguru lists the best of her performances since she became the first one to ever win an Academy Award for Best Actress in a French movie just a mere 8 years ago.
1) La Vie en Rose : 2007 Cotillard had been successfully working away in movies in France for ten years until the whole world suddenly discovered her as Édith Piaf. Her subliminal performance blew us all away and for it she won Academy Award, BAFTA Award, César Award, and the Golden Globe Award and (another 26 Awards) for Best Actress.
2) Rust & Bone : 2012. Put in charge of his young son, a rough edged ex-boxer Alain leaves Belgium for Antibes to live with his sister and her husband as a family. Alain's bond with Stephanie, a killer whale trainer, a sophisticated woman who seems so out of his league, grows deeper after Stephanie suffers a horrible accident. Cotillard, with the support of co-star Matthias Schoenaerts, gives a mesmerizing performance as the disfigured beautiful young woman for which she received nominations for CĂ©sar, Golden Globe , BAFTA and SAG Awards for Best Actress.
3) Two Days, One Night : 2014. In this wonderful movie written and directed by the Dardennes Brothers, Cotillard plays a young mother who discovers that her workmates have opted for a significant pay bonus, in exchange for her dismissal. She has only one weekend to convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses so that she can keep her job. 'Time Out Magazine' called it a 'career-high performance' for Cotillard and it earned her another Academy Award Best Actress Nomination.
6) The Immigrant : 2013. Variety Magazine said that James Gray's poignant period drama 'boasts an arrestingly soulful performance from Marion Cotillard' as a Polish nurse-turned-prostitute for whom the symbolic promise of Ellis Island presents only hardship. Variety go on to add "Gray clearly sees something in Cotillard that no other helmer — not even her husband, Guillaume Canet — has brought out in her before. Recognizing the deep, haunted quality of Cotillard’s gaze, he features her eyes as the soul of his story, counting on their mournful quality to play to the back of the house, even as he resists unnecessary closeups in favor of broad-canvas widescreen as much as possible'
7) Midnight in Paris : 2011 . In what is probably Woody Allen's best movie for years with its usual packed Hollywood 'A' List cast, Cotillard stands out as Adriana an aspiring fashion designer who has a history of inspiring artists, and who is the one person who unsettles Gil the American the most on his nightly walks around Paris. As well she should.

Julianne and James get Bold and Lyrical
The more we see of James Corden hosting The Late Late Show on nightly on CBS, the more we grow to love him. He manages to persuade the most unlikely major Hollywood stars to take part in his tomfoolery, and they not only seem to be lining up in droves to be on the Show, but they all throw themselves into the spirit of it and appear to be having such a blast in his silly, but very clever, skits.
This Monday it was the turn of Oscar winner Julianne Moore and heartthrob John Stamos act out a scene from a soap opera 'The Bold and the Lyrical' using nothing but Taylor Swift (cheesy) lyrics. At one point, Julianne quotes “Someone Like You,” with the James calling her out on the mistake, saying: “I think that’s Adele, Good song though!” Julianne in particular is a very good sport and the whole thing is hilariously funny.

The Iris Prize Festival blooms again.
One of queerguru's very favorite Film Festivals kicks open tomorrow Wednesday 7th October in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. The centerpiece of the Festival is the Iris Prize, known to film aficionados as the Gay Short Film Oscars, as it is the world’s largest short film prize with a whopping £30,000. Funded by the Michael Bishop Foundation, it is presented annually to the Best LGBT short film as decided by an independent jury, chaired this year by actress Lynn Hunter.
The purpose of this prestigious Award is to fund young filmmakers next short movie. Past winners include Brazilian filmmaker Daniel Ribeiro with his ‘I Don’t Want To Go Back Alone’ who used his prize as seed money to make his first ever feature film 'The Way He Looks' that went on to win the coveted Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival and then became his country's official submission to the Oscars.
This year there are 40 amazing stories representing the diversity of LGBT life from 18 countries competing for an Iris Prize, plus a whole sprinkling of international features that play throughout the five days of the Festival. From the latter we have chosen queerguru's four top must-see picks for those of you who still haven't made your mind up.
Scrum: a new documentary film about last year’s huge Bingham Cup (named after Mark Bingham the gay hero of 9/11 tragedy) gay and inclusive rugby tournament involving teams from around the world competing in Sydney is premiering next month. Director Poppy Stockwell follows the journey of the tournament’s winning team and the personal stories of three gay men whose lives are changed under the tutelage of a determined coach as they vie for the honor of playing for the Sydney Convicts team at the gay rugby World Cup. With the trickle of Rugby players 'coming out' increasing slowly each week, the movie hits a very topical issue and goes towards helping us understanding the inbred homophobia that all sportsmen must deal with.
How To Win At Checkers (Every Time) : is a refreshing coming-of-age drama debut movie from American/Korean filmmaker Josh Kim about two orphaned brothers who have to deal with the reality of social inequality which he does without sinking into melodrama or dragging out any of the usual cliched stereotypes. The compassionate fraternal relationship is particular touching and makes this heartbreaking story such a sheer joy to watch. Check out the full review from Queertiques. It has recently been selected as Thailand's Official Submission for a Best Foreign Picture Oscar.
Portrait of A Serial Monogamist: we have a weakness for smart romantic comedies that tackle commitment issues with a real sense of humor. This one from Canada is the story of Elsie, a forty-something television producer and serial monogamist with a long history of broken hearts. When she breaks up with her long-term girlfriend to pursue a younger woman, Elsie is faced with pressure from her friends and family, and the growing realization that she may have made a mistake.
Those People : We discovered this movie at its US East Coast Premiere this summer and have not stopped raving out it since. We think that Joey Kuhn the writer/director of this movie that he made for his Degree, is a remarkable fresh new talent who is destined for big things, In this delightful story about the consequences of young unrequited love, Kuhn focuses on friendships and relationships, and for a refreshing change not on the men's sexuality. He did however imbue the scenes between Charlie and and his never-to-be Sebastian with such a sensuality that comes with any connection which teeters around being almost physical, and when Charlie does have a beau and consummates their relationship, the emphasis was on being both tender and erotic rather than just explicit. Click here for our full review.
P.S. The people behind the scenes at The Iris have the most perfect mantra for enjoying their Festival. 'Watch films. Party nightly. Repeat.'

Candace Carmen Bure's View is Offensive
Former Who’s The Boss? child star Danny Pintauro has been doing the rounds of the TV chat shows and openly talking about his HIV status and his past drug use. He started with Oprah and yesterday he ended up in the couch with The View co-hosts Candace Cameron Bure and Raven SymonĂ© (both of whom are former child stars themselves,) for a very frank discussion. Pintauro, with his husband sitting in the studio audience did not hold back.
Asked by Bure why he decided to reveal his HIV status now, Pintauro said, "Telling your family that you’ve got HIV is hard enough. Telling your friends that you had a meth problem is hard enough. Telling the country–it takes some time." Speaking of his crystal meth use, Pintauro said that his use was intertwined with sex. "As soon as I wanted to explore some rougher sides of my sexuality, I encountered meth…The reason I kept doing it over the years was probably because I had some stuff in my life that I was not ready to deal with."
Pintauro does not have AIDS. He is HIV positive and says he is undetectable, and he wasn't at all phased when SymonĂ© asked Pintauro’s husband if they have unprotected sex. That was a rather innocuous question compared to what Bure had to say about the matter . “I want to know, do you take responsibility for your actions? For being promiscuous, going into a lifestyle of having heightened sex because of the meth that you were using? I want to know what the message is. Because you want to be the face of HIV, to give that a face. But what is the message that you have? What does that mean?”
Pintauros did well and did not respond to such patronizing and high-minded righteous condescension with the anger that has now lit up social media. He simply responded that he absolutely takes responsibility for his actions, and added “I don’t want to be a hero. I don’t want to be a role model. I want to be the example.”
Why such ignorant people like Bure are allowed to sit in judgement of others in such an offensive manner and in response like this to someone whose courage in being so honest and open will actually help others in similar circumstances, is beyond me. As long as she remains on The View, it will not remain on my viewing schedule.

Sam Smith soars for Spectre
Sam Smith really soars in this superb new video released today of 'Writing On The Wall' his theme song for 'Spectre' the new Bond movie, that he co-wrote with fellow Grammy Award Winner Jimmy Napes. The video directed by long-term collaborator Luke Monaghan weaves in scenes from the eagerly awaited movie with Daniel Craig back again as 007 and this time he is making out with Lucia (played by Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal.
'Writing On The Wall' is the first James Bond theme song recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965, and the very first ever by an openly gay musician. After premiering on September 25 worldwide, it rocketed to the top of the charts and made chart history by becoming the first Bond theme song ever to score a UK No. 1. Even Dame Shirley Bassey never achieved that, but we know that she would be so proud of 'our Sam'

Over the years it has grown way past anyone's expectations with events that include workshops, meet-and-greets, lesbian literary festival, walking tours and of course the very best entertainers to perform all week. One iconic star who is an undoubted highlight of the week and will be performing most nights is Kate Clinton who calls herself 'a faith-based, tax-paying, America-loving political humorist and family entertainer.'
